Maternal & Newborn Health Educational Initiative [September 2025]

Maternal & Newborn Healthcare Provider Trainings

We conducted two multi-day training sessions, reaching a total of 101 healthcare providers. These trainings were carried out in collaboration with traditional and government leaders in Egbuoma at Afor Egbuoma Clinic, as well as at the state level at Eze-Imo’s. Palace in Owerri.
Our team trained midwives, skilled and traditional birth attendants, and other healthcare providers using standardized, evidence based simulation, hands-on, and team-centered teaching methods. The curriculum focused on the leading causes of maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality, including postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, infection, immediate newborn care, and breathing support in the first minute of life.
Each participant received a provider kit containing the essential equipment and supplies used during the training such as a neonatal ambu bag, blood pressure cuff, delivery gown, delivery instruments, bulb suction, cord clamps, speculum, scalpel blade, thermometer, and educational provider guides. These kits enable providers to immediately apply the skills learned in their clinical settings and to train others using a “train-the-trainer” approach.

PRENATAL & POSTNATAL CLINICS

Over a two day period, we partnered with Nkwo Egbuoma Health Clinic to host prenatal and postnatal clinics serving 125+ women from the local community. There was a Q&A forum and mothers received vital education including breastfeeding information. Each woman also received packs to take home, delivery packs for the prenatal women and newborn packs for the postpartum women.

Our Past Projects [2023-2024]

We have had many opportunities to connect & serve our Mothers & Babies already within Egbuoma. We have had over 200 Labor & Newborn kits generously donated, purchased two new delivery beds and other necessary equipment & supplies to further enable & support safe care. We were also able to hold a training the newborn resuscitation from the program “Helping Babies Breathe.” Midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants, and maternal & newborn community health workers gathered for a beautiful day of shared learning & connection.
